Calne RFC

10 - 16

(HT 0-0)

Swindon College Old Boys RFC

October 19th saw Calne host their perennial rivals, Swindon College Old Boys (SCOB), in their eagerly anticipated first clash of the season.

Calne began with a strong, confident start, showcasing well-drilled teamwork and solid tactics. However, SCOB quickly proved their tenacity as opponents, responding with aggressive play that pushed Calne back deep into their own 22. The pressure paid off, with SCOB scoring a try in the 14th minute. A quick follow-up penalty just five minutes later stretched their lead to 0-8. With Calne struggling to clear their lines, SCOB capitalised, maintaining dominance throughout much of the first half. Another powerful drive resulted in a try in the 34th minute, and a penalty just before the break in the 43rd brought the score to 0-16 at halftime.

The halftime whistle seemed to invigorate Calne, who came back onto the field with renewed determination and energy. What followed was a fierce and gritty second half, marked by a battle for every inch of the pitch. In the 46th minute, after a tense and physical breakdown near SCOB's try line, No. 5 Will Child broke through to score Calne's first points, narrowing the gap to 5-16. Calne's momentum grew as they gained ground, their fitness and sheer determination becoming more apparent with every minute. A breakthrough came in the 67th minute when No. 20 James Nash (sponsored by KGH Electrical) sliced through the defense to score, bringing the game to 10-16.

Though Calne pushed hard in the final stages, pressing SCOB's defense, neither team managed to score again, and SCOB secured the win.

The match featured standout performances, particularly from No. 7 Ollie Armand (sponsored by TT Fitness Hub), who earned the Riches Roofing Man of the Match award for his relentless work rate and skill. After the game, both teams shared a post-match meal, generously hosted by The Pewsham, to whom we extend our heartfelt thanks for their support.

While the final score leaves Calne with plenty to reflect on, the match was a thrilling and hard-fought contest. A big thank you to SCOB for an excellent game, and to all the fans who came out to cheer us on.
