Calne Finish the League Season in Style
Calne RFC rounded off their league campaign with an emphatic 40-17 victory over Colerne in a physical and well-contested match. A strong team performance, highlighted by sharp attacking play and resilient defense, saw Calne take control in key moments to secure the win.
The game got off to a lively start, with Calne applying early pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 10th minute when Marcus Turner (WR Fitness Solutions) powered over the line for the first try of the match. Rhys Taylor (Rexel) stepped up and slotted the conversion to give Calne a 7-0 lead.
Colerne responded well and found a breakthrough in the 17th minute, crossing for a well-worked try which they successfully converted to level the scores at 7-7. The home side then edged ahead in the 29th minute, converting a penalty to take a 10-7 lead.
Calne answered back swiftly, with Chris McAlonan (GC Pressure Washing) crashing over in the 34th minute. The conversion attempt went wide, but Calne had reclaimed the lead at 12-10. Just before halftime, Marcus Turner (WR Fitness Solutions) struck again in the 37th minute, securing his second try of the match, with Rhys Taylor (Rexel) adding the extras to send Calne into the break with a 19-10 advantage.
The second half saw Calne assert further dominance. In the 50th minute, Jay Jennings (CrossFit) finished off an excellent team move, extending the lead, with Rhys Taylor (Rexel) converting to make it 26-10.
Colerne refused to go down without a fight, and in the 70th minute, they managed to breach Calne’s defense again, adding a converted try to bring the score to 26-17.
However, any hopes of a Colerne comeback were dashed in the final moments, as Calne turned on the style. In the 79th minute, Ollie Armand (TT Fitness) crossed the line, with Rhys Taylor (Rexel) maintaining his kicking form to extend the lead to 33-17. Then, with the clock deep into injury time, Marcus Turner (WR Fitness Solutions) completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute, with Rhys Taylor (Rexel) adding the conversion to seal a convincing 40-17 victory.
A fantastic way to finish the league season, with the team showing great determination and attacking flair. Special mention to Kev Herbert (Customised Creations), who was named Man of the Match for his outstanding performance across the park. His work rate and leadership were instrumental in securing the win.
Calne now look ahead to their upcoming friendly, keen to build on this strong performance.
