On Saturday, February 8th, Minety and Calne faced off in an exhilarating rugby match that kept spectators on the edge until the final whistle. Under low cloud and with temperatures hovering just above freezing, the teams battled it out on a pitch made heavy by persistent overnight rain.
Minety struck first, asserting their dominance early with a well-earned try in the 6th minute, converted to give them a 7-0 lead. Calne, however, wasted no time responding. In the 11th minute, Adam Roberts stormed over the line, and with Liam Kearney successfully slotting the conversion, the score was leveled at 7-7.
As the game progressed, momentum shifted in Calne’s favor. A powerful maul led to their second try, with Captain Pete Brownlie grounding the ball in the 26th minute. The conversion attempt was missed, leaving the score at 12-7. Minety hit back almost immediately with a spirited response, scoring a try and successfully converting to edge ahead 14-12. But Calne weren’t done yet. Chris McAlonan scored a skilful try from yet another dominant maul in the 40th minute. This time the conversion was successful, sending Calne into halftime with a 19-14 lead.
The second half began with both teams showing renewed energy and determination. Calne struck first again, extending their lead in the 50th minute with a storming try from Pete Brownlie, his second of the match. Though the conversion was missed, Calne stretched their advantage to 24-14. Liam Kearney added three more points to Calne’s tally with a well-taken penalty, putting them firmly in control at 27-14.
Minety, refusing to give up, scored the final try of the match in the 70th minute. With a successful conversion, they closed the gap to 27-20. Despite their best efforts in the final stages, Minety could not break through Calne’s resilient defense again, and the game ended with the score firmly in Calne’s favor.
It was a thrilling match, full of momentum swings and standout moments from both sides, with Cpt Pete Brownlie winning the Riches Roofing Man of the Match Award for Calne. Minety started strong and fought hard throughout, but it was Calne’s composure, powerful forward play, and clinical execution in key moments that ultimately earned them a well-deserved victory.
