Calne RFC travelled to Supermarine on Saturday looking to build on recent improvements — and for long periods they matched their hosts in an entertaining and physical league encounter.
Supermarine made the brighter start, crossing twice in the opening ten minutes to take a 14–0 lead. Calne’s response was immediate and full of intent. The forwards began to control possession, recycling well and earning territory through patient build-up. That pressure paid off when Harry Lippatt, sponsored by Your Wellbeing Clinic Ltd, powered over to open Calne’s account, with Chris Addinell (sponsored by the VPs of Calne Rugby) adding the conversion.
Calne struck again just minutes later as Ali Colgrave — available to sponsor — finished off another well-worked team move to close the gap to 14–12. The momentum was firmly with Calne at the break, and the travelling supporters sensed an upset might be on the cards.
The second half was a tighter affair, with both sides trading territory but defences largely holding firm. Supermarine eventually broke through on 57 minutes to restore a two-score cushion, and despite sustained pressure from Calne in the final quarter, the hosts added a late converted try to seal a 26–12 victory.
It was a performance full of heart and effort from Calne, whose defensive line held strong for long spells and whose pack continued to impress around the breakdown. Chris McAlonan, sponsored by Phil Thomas, led by example throughout — his work rate and leadership earning him the Lowerfields Farm Man of the Match award.
