Calne II delivered a determined performance to overcome Westbury II 29-17 in challenging conditions on a wet and windy Saturday. The visitors combined forward dominance with moments of clinical finishing to secure a well-earned victory after an evenly balanced first half.

Westbury opened the scoring early with a well-constructed try, capitalizing on some quick ball to take the lead. Calne responded with excellent structure from their forwards, drawing the defense in tight. With space opening on the blindside, slick passing released No. 14 Si Hansen (sponsored by Casali Recruitment Ltd), who finished strongly in the corner to level the score.

The hosts struck again shortly after, using a moment of defensive indecision to cross for their second try. But Calne refused to be shaken, and just before halftime, their relentless pressure on the Westbury line created an opportunity. After multiple phases of forward drives, No. 8 Tom Denham (sponsored by Rob O’Neill Fitness & Nutrition) spotted a gap on the edge and darted through to bring the score to 10-10 at the break.

The second half saw Calne step up a gear. A failed clearance from Westbury in their 22 gave No. 6 Rory Cranstoun (sponsored by The Wellbeing Clinic) a chance to pounce, scooping up the loose ball and diving over to give the visitors the lead. Calne extended their advantage shortly after with a moment of brilliance from No. 15 Max Henshall (sponsored by Rob O’Neill Fitness & Nutrition). Using the wind to his advantage, he launched a near-perfect 50-22 kick that refused to go into touch. Max chased hard, intercepted the rushed Westbury clearance, and cruised over the line for a stunning solo try.

Despite the worsening conditions, Calne’s forwards continued to grind down the opposition. With the pitch turning into a bog, their determination set the platform for another breakthrough. After sustained pressure, Tom Denham broke free with a line break inside the Westbury 22, securing his second try of the match.

Westbury managed to cross for a late consolation try, but it wasn’t enough to trouble the result. No. 9 Chris Addinnel added two conversions for Calne, rounding out the 29-17 victory.

Calne’s adaptability and composure in the face of both a spirited Westbury side and harsh weather conditions proved decisive, as they left with a well-deserved win. With the game over, both teams retired to enjoy an after-match meal courtesy of Westbury, where Tom Denham was awarded the Riches Roofing Man of the Match Award for his excellent performance and grit throughout the game.

We thank Westbury II for their hospitality and a fantastic game, and look forward to seeing all our supporters at Sutton Benger on 30th November for what promises to be another exciting showdown.
